[PRACTICE 1] 다음 빈칸에 들어갈 말로 가장 적절한 것은?

 

Similarity is the shadow of difference. 

유사성은 차별성의 그림자이다. 

 

Two things are similar by virtue of their difference from another; or different by virtue of one’s similarity to a third. 

두 개의 사물이 또 다른 사물과 다름으로 인해 비슷해지기도 하고, 하나가 제3의 사물과 유사함으로 인해 달라지기도 한다. 

 

So it is with individuals. 

개개인의 사람들도 마찬가지이다. 

 

A short man is different from a tall man, but two men seem similar if contrasted with a woman. So it is with species.

키 작은 남자는 키 큰 남자와 다르지만, 여성과 대비될 경우에는 두 남자가 비슷해 보인다. 종(種)들의 경우에도 그렇다. 

 

A man and a woman may be very different, but by comparison with a chimpanzee, it is their similarities that strike the eye - the hairless skin, the upright stance, the prominent nose. 

남자와 여자는 매우 다르지만, 침팬지와 비교하면 털 없는 피부, 직립(直立), 돌출된 코와 같은 그들의 유사성이 눈에 확 들어온다. 

 

A chimpanzee, in turn, is similar to a human being when contrasted with a dog: the face, the hands, the 32 teeth, and so on. 

연이어 생각해 보면 침팬지는 개와 대비될 때는 얼굴, 양손, 32개의 치아 등의 측면에서 인간과 유사하다. 

 

And a dog is like a person to the extent that both are unlike a fish.

그리고 둘 다 물고기와 다르다는 점에서 개는 인간과 비슷하다.
