I once had an interview with a man for a position with a client of mine. 

나는 언젠가 내 고객 한 명과 함께, 일자리에 지원한 어느 남성과 면접을 한 적이 있었다. 

 

I came away from the interview thinking that ① he was probably the worst interviewee I had seen in months. 

아마도 그는 내가 몇 개월 동안 만났던 면접 대상자들 중에서 최악이라고 생각하면서 나는 그 면접장을 떠났다. 

 

The next day the executive search agent who had set up the interview called for my response, and I told ② him that I wasn’t interested in pursuing the matter further. 

다음 날 그 면접을 마련했던 헤드헌팅 사 직원이 내 대답을 요청해서, 나는 그에게 그 문제를 더 진행하는데 관심이 없다고 말했다. 

 

He expressed great surprise, “When I talked with the applicant he was jubilant. He felt that ③ he had come across well and that you had been very favorably impressed!” 

그는 큰 놀라움을 표명했다. “제가 그 지원자와 얘기했을 때 그는 기뻐했습니다. 그는 자신이 좋은 인상을 주었고 선생님께서 아주 호의적인 인상을 받은 것으로 생각하던데요!” 

 

All that applicant did was to delude himself and build himself up for a great letdown. 

그 지원자가 한 일은, 자신을 속이고 큰 실망에 대비하여 자신을 과대 포장한 것뿐이었다. 

 

④ He had apparently made some very basic erroneous assumptions about me and my reaction. 

그는 분명히 나와 내 반응에 대해 어떤 아주 잘못된 기본적 가정을 했던 것 같았다. 

 

And he had walked away from the interview thinking that ⑤ he was very close to receiving a job offer. 

그리고 그는 자신이 일자리 제의를 받는 것에 아주 근접해 있다고 생각하며 그 면접장을 걸어 나갔던 것이다.
