Many people believe that their intellectual ability is hardwired from birth, and that failure to meet a learning challenge shows how bad their native ability is. 

많은 사람들은 자신들의 지적 능력이 태어날 때부터 정해져 있고, 학업의 어려움에 대처하지 못하는 것은 자신들의 타고난 능력이 얼마나 좋지 않은가를 보여 준다고 믿는다. 

 

But every time you learn something new, you change the brain — the residue of your experiences is stored. 

그러나 새로운 것을 배울 때마다 여러분은 ‘뇌를 변화 시킨다’. 즉 여러분이 겪는 경험의 잔여물이 저장되는 것이다. 

 

It’s true that we start life with the gift of our genes, but it’s also true that we become capable through the learning and development of mental models that enable us to reason, solve, and create. 

우리가 유전자라는 선물을 가지고 삶을 시작하는 것은 사실이지만, 우리로 하여금 추론하고, 해결하고, 창조할 수 있게 하는 정신적 모델의 학습과 개발을 통해 우리가 유능해진다는 것도 역시 사실이다. 

 

In other words, the elements that shape your intellectual abilities lie to a surprising extent within your own control. 

다른 말로 하면, 여러분의 지적 능력을 형성하는 요소는 놀라울 정도로 여러분 자신의 통제 안에 있다. 

 

Understanding that this is so enables you to see failure as a badge of effort and a source of useful information — the need to dig deeper or to try a different strategy. 

이것이 그렇다는 것을 이해하면, 실패를 노력의 상징과 유용한 정보의 원천으로, 즉 더 깊이 탐구하거나 다른 전략을 시도해 볼 필요성으로 간주할 수 있게 된다.
