Water availability is a major agricultural concern in India, especially for cultivation of rice. 

인도에서 물의 이용 가능성은 특히 쌀의 경작을 위해 중요 한 농업적 관심사이다. 

 

Since only 44 percent of the country’s agricultural land is irrigated, millions of rice growers must rely on annual monsoons. 

그 나라 농토의 44퍼센트만이 관개되기 때문에, 수백만 명의 쌀 재배자들은 매년 오는 우기에 의존해야 한다. 

 

Over the past 30 years, though, India’s farmers have faced challenges as extreme weather events during the monsoon season — including droughts — have become more frequent. 

하지만 지난 30년 동안, 인도의 농부들은 우기 동안 발생하는, 가뭄을 포함한 극단적인 날씨 현상들이 더 빈번해짐에 따라 난관에 직면해 왔다. 

 

Water-use plans are one tool being used to help thirsty regions.

In 2009, the Indian government began a national watershed management program to promote more efficient water use through education and technical support.

Another innovation: Substantial progress has been made in developing hybrid rice varieties that grow faster while using less water. 

또 다른 혁신으로는, 물을 덜 사용하면서도 더 빠르게 자라는 하이브리드 벼 품종을 개발하는 데 상당한 진전이 이루어졌다. 

 

A new drought-resistant basmati rice variety matures about 30 days earlier than previous crossbred varieties. 

가뭄에 잘 견디는 새로운 바스마티 벼 품종은 이전의 교배종보다 30일 정도 일찍 익는다. 

 

Farmers across India are already praising the high-yielding variety. 

이미 인도 전역의 농부들이 그 다수확 품종을 칭송하고 있다.
